A look back at the successful saga of an ambitious family
It was on April 1st 1950 that the first Ming put down his suitcases in Vevey. It was Josef Ming, born in Obwalden and from a hotel family, great-uncle of Nicolas and Christophe Ming – current directors of the Astra Hotel Vevey.
Already manager of a hotel in Crans-Montana, Josef Ming took over the Buffet de la Gare – also known as the “Pavillon des voyageurs” – and its seven guest rooms and renamed it “Hôtel Pavillon”.
In 1965, he handed over the management to his nephew Niklaus, who took over the management with his wife Monique in 1970. In 1972, the couple founded the company Gestion Hôtelière Ming SA, which was finally able to buy the establishment in 1980. They then undertook several renovations and expansions to arrive, in 1991, at a 32-room 4-star hotel, which was completed in 1993 with 20 studios with kitchenette. At the same time, the former “Hotel Touring et Gare”, previously owned by the Signorell family, was demolished. On the same square, the new central building of the Ming family’s hotel complex is erected, offering 30 additional rooms, the current reception, restaurant, conference rooms and roof terrace with wellness area. Its inauguration takes place at the right time, just before the 1999 Winegrowers’ Festival!
In 2005, the Ming brothers – already in the company since 1998 – took over the management of the Hotel Pavillon together, renaming it “Astra Hotel Vevey” and in turn enlarging it with 7 additional rooms and an outdoor jacuzzi to complete the Spa offer. Their efforts were rewarded as the hotel now has a 4-star Superior rating. But the improvement in terms of guest comfort continues: between 2015 and 2019, the 100 rooms, the Astra Lobby Bar & Lounge, the conference rooms as well as the historic Brasserie La Coupole 1912 will once again be rejuvenated! To be ready to welcome, this time, the visitors of the 2019 Winegrowers’ Festival!
In 2020, the Ming family is proud to celebrate its 70th anniversary on the Place de la Gare in Vevey and is looking forward to celebrating this jubilee with all its clients, partners and friends.
